House hunting update
Jun. 16th, 2009 04:12 pmWell, we are still waiting for an offer on our house. The open house was well attended. 50 or so groups came through, and I had a steady stream of people through yesterday. One agent stopped by this afternoon, but I haven't heard from anyone else. Having to be ready to show the house at any time, not to mention getting kicked out for hours at a time, is surprisingly hard.
Our listing is updated here:

It shows some good photos of the slate entry we put in, as well as a lot of the trim work we did.

Last week: Okay price, but not much to go on picture wise.
http://www.windermere.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=listing.SearchLanding&searchConstraintType=mls&ln=29061286
After seeing it: This one was horrible. Really, really horrible. It looked like the set of a post-apocolyptic zombie movie, and smelled about like that too. Even in tip-top shape it would have long, cramped rooms and all the charm of an abandoned winnebago.

Last week: What is wrong with this one that the price is so low?
http://www.windermere.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=listing.SearchLanding&searchConstraintType=mls&ln=28136344
This week: It is a short sale, that is why it is so cheap. It was on our list of houses to go see, but when our real estate agent explained that with short sales you make an offer and the bank may or may not get back to you, we elected to not go see it. We need a house that will close around the same time as ours does.

Last week: gorgeous house, but at the very tip top of our price range.
http://www.windermere.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=listing.SearchLanding&searchConstraintType=mls&ln=29069992
After seeing it: It isn't actually a gorgeous house. It just photographs well. Small, strange spaces. Cramped master bedroom. Weird kitchen. Not for us.

Last week: Kind of ugly. Might work in person. At the top of our price range.
http://www.windermere.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=listing.SearchLanding&searchConstraintType=mls&ln=29043721
This week: We didn't go look at this one. We sat down and did a hard look at our finances, and we need a house at $370,000 or so or below (preferable below) or it does not make sense for us to move.

Last week: This is so ugly it makes our eyes bleed, but siding can be changed if the interior space are okay. Looks like it might have a great view. Also, the price is right.

This week: It is actually kind of cute in person. The photo on the listing is really a bad representation of it. It would actually be a nice house for someone, just not us. The spaces are small and the kitchen is kind of strange. It is full of light and has a great view though. If we had to live there it would be fine, but we don't, so we won't.
Still in the running:

Last week: At the top of our list, though a little more than we want to pay.
http://www.windermere.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=listing.SearchLanding&searchConstraintType=mls&ln=29067029
After seeing it: OMG! Squeee! You should see the kitchen. It looks like something out of architectural digest, and the shower in the -huge- master bedroom is the two person tile walk-in kind that you only see in magazines. Nice spaces, no obvious structural flaws. It does need a lot of work on the deck, and the fabulous shower isn't actually finished all the way, but I can see us living there really easily.

Last week: Looks like it might work. I like the lot a great deal.
http://www.windermere.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=listing.SearchLanding&searchConstraintType=mls&ln=29054358
After seeing it: I still like the lot. The house needs a lot of work, and the ceiling in the weirdly remodeled kitchen is really low. We both wonder what horrors the inspection will reveal with the exterior of the house which is peeling and pitted pretty badly. I can imagine it as a great house, but it needs a lot of work.

We both like 29083468, but I am getting the hang of looking at real estate pictures, and I suspect the spaces are not as nice as they look in the pictures. It is also a little on the pricey side, and there is no reason for them to come down in price so soon after listing.
Case in point about real estate pictures. How many cars would you say will fit in the driveway of 29083566?
6? 8?
Nope. 4. And the last two cars to pull in would have their rear bumpers right at the street.
It looks like a nice house. The price is so low because two houses away are a bunch of high-power lines, and the closed grade school behind it is on the list of possible sites for a new detention facility. Low price or not, it is going to have to bee pretty spectacular for us to want to live there.
