da da dada da, dada dada dada da
May. 1st, 2005 08:30 pmSo, Friday was Puddletown's Annual General Meeting (AGM). We get our financial year end reports, talk about general business and elect new officers.
First off, it was the most people we have had at an AGM in years and years. The first one that Ron and I went to a few years ago we were running late so we stopped for food expecting to hide at the back and eat. We walked in and there were three people around the table. Lyle looked up and said, "did you bring enough for everyone?" This year there must have been 20 of us just from Squares, and there was a good group from BOQ as well (usually no one from BOQ shows up except Keith (and he sort of has to since he is the chair of Puddletown and he runs the meeting) and DC).
Most of the business went quickly. We don't have any major issues going on (a few bubbling under the surface but we avoided those.) The fly-in broke even so that was a good thing. No real news on next years fly-in yet. We liked this years location a lot, but they don't let people reserve until three months in advance, and that is a little stressful. I wish we could do a big location fly-in like the east coast clubs do, but we don't think the club could afford that (and I'm sure a lot of us would not be able to afford to go....)
Then it was time to elect officers. The umbrella (get it, umbrella...Puddletown?) organization is Dancers, so their board went first. Keith remains our chair. He also made his annual protest that this is his last year for real this time. Next year the rest of the club will do our annual ignoring his protests and elect him to another term. He is great for the club, not only because he is passionate about square dancing, but because he doesn't allow politics. He knocks heads together instead.
Then squares and BOQ split off to elect their own officers. When the Squares president mentioned that he would be more than willing to step down since he just only took the job a few years ago because no one else wanted it, I said I would be glad to take the position.
Everyone spontaneously started applauding. I was kind of embarrassed.
Ron retains his position as squares rep to the dancer board so we are both on the board as well as my retaining the newsletter as my responsibility.
I have lots of ideas about how to improve the health of the club and retain and recruit dancers, so I think I can actually make a difference. We'll see.
