Community Square Dancing

I just sent out the following Press Release. It should be a lot of fun if you want to get a taste of what Ron and I do with so much of our time!

Puddletown Squares, Seattle’s square dance club for Gays, Lesbians, and their friends will be having a Community Square Dance with caller Susan Morris, September 29th at West Seattle Tibbets Methodist Church, 3940 41st Ave SW, from 7–9:30pm. $10 dollars at the door.

The Community Dance Program is a big change from the type of square dancing that Puddletown Squares usually does in that dancers can come when they can and learn everything they need to dance that evening. The caller calls squares, mixers, circle dances, traditional dances, contras, trios, and mecolanzas. The dances are easily taught and always walked through before dancing them.

Square dancing is fun for all ages and is a great alternative to the bars. Longtime dancer and treasurer of Puddletown Squares, Ross Crawshaw-Lopton says, “Square Dancing is one of the few events in our community where not only do men and women have fun together, but they bring their kids and their parents and their straight friends!”

Nice release. Let us know what kind of response you get. Like many clubs, Cleveland is struggling for new members and is always open to new recruiting ideas.

I don't think it will help with recruiting directly (and in fact I am making sure we are not doing any sort of bait-and-switch to get people to do Modern Western Square Dancing. But I am hoping that if we get enough people to fall in love with square dancing, they will want to put in the time to learn to do what we do.
