dressers

So, one of the things I am painting along with the seemingly unending yards of trim, is two of our dressers. One is particle board that I got used and painted blue twenty-five years ago, the other is an old wooden dresser that is about the same quality as the particle board dresser, but from before particle board was used for furniture. At some point in its life it was spray-painted black.

Anyway, I went to paint them yesterday (in Roycroft Brass) and it turned into a repair project. We knew that one of the drawers in the black dresser had come apart, so I re-nailed and wood glued that. If it falls apart again I'm not sure how I will fix it...there isn't much wood left. The blue dresser had developed a definite bow in the sides where the cross rails had separated from the sides, and was missing the bottom cross rail. I had Ron cut some new cross rails, then I put them in place. The dresser is old enough that I had to screw in from the sides so that was unsightly, but the carcass is rock solid now.

Painting took a really long time, and I had to do a second coat today which took another really long time. Once everything was dry to the touch I went to put the drawers back in (I was going to leave them hanging out and do another coat on the faces) so I could move some building supplies into the bedroom and try to get the house ready for the pet sitter and discovered that the drawers don't fit anymore in the (formerly) blue dresser. Not even close. They had spread and collapsed along with the rest of the dresser so now that the carcass is tight, they are a good 1/8 to 1/4 inches too big width-wise for the holes they need to go into. We both think they would just fall apart if we tried to take them apart and fix them.

Since the budget is shot for the next 20 years anyway, we may be getting a new dresser.

(oh, and to everyone who commented on my typing error last post....you all have dirty, dirty minds... :-)
