Brrrr... part 2

The furnace is dead. Well, the hot water handler is dead. Our furnace uses hot water to generate heat (and hot water) and when the gizmo that moves the water fell apart, it left pieces of its propeller all through the tubes that the water moves in. The parts were clogging up the tubes and the new gizmo proceeded to move the water, and the broken plastic pieces through the new gizmo's propeller, promptly adding more chewed up plastic pieces to the system. (The gizmo getting chewed up is apparently common, the parts just fall to the bottom of the tank and there is no problem so the service guy was pretty horrified when they turned out to be in the circulation system and chewed up the new gizmo.) The only way to get all the plastic out of the tank and the tubes involved a blow torch and welder and a large machine shop and no one held out any hope for it actually working even if it could be carried out in our front entry closet.

They no longer make our furnace so we can't just swap something out. In fact, there is a class action lawsuit in California against the manufacturer by owners of this system (Lennox Complete Heat if anyone is curious.)

So, we have to replace everything. Because of our space restrictions, we are limited in our choices. We are going with a super efficient gas furnace that will go down in the crawl space, and a European style continuous flow water heater.

It pretty thoroughly sets what progress we had made paying down our debt back and then some.

Meanwhile, we are still sleeping in the living room as work on the Remodel goes slowly. The trim turned out to be really difficult and really slow. Ron can elaborate on that on his blog sometime. Fortunately we had the money for that saved and the cost overruns, while real, have not been horrific.

In any case, they will order all the new stuff tomorrow, people without heat and/or hot water go to the top of the service list, so since we are lacking both they will install starting Wednesday and be done on Thursday.

Oh, and we are supposed to get our first freeze of the season tonight.

We've been spending a good hour in there every night just to warm-up...
